The graph below illustrates the annual expenditure on health care in three different countries, in US dollars, between 1995 and 2005.
As can be seen from the graph, in 1995, the total expenditure in all three countries was around 60 billion US dollars. Over the next ten years, there was a significant increase in expenditure in all countries. By 2005, the total expenditure had reached approximately 140 billion US dollars.
In the UK, the annual expenditure increased from 20 billion to 40 billion US dollars. In China, the expenditure rose from 5 billion to 20 billion US dollars. However, the most dramatic increase was in Japan, where the expenditure jumped from 15 billion to 50 billion US dollars.
It is evident that the increase in health care expenditure in these countries is due to several factors. Firstly, as people become wealthier, they are more willing to spend on health care. Secondly, the aging population in these countries means that there is a greater demand for medical services. Lastly, the advancement of medical technology has led to higher costs for health care.
